Burglar shot twice by homeowner

A brazen afternoon break-in in Belize City has left the suspected burglar suffering from gunshot wounds and the defiant homeowner lucky to be alive. According to police, around three Wednesday afternoon, twenty year old Bert Vasquez was at home on Raccoon Street Extension when he heard suspicious sounds coming from the back of the house. Vasquez says he called his mother, City Councillor Debbie Vasquez, to tell her about the noise. The young man says by the time he got to the site of the intrusion, he found three people in the process of stealing his belongings. When the intruders saw Vasquez, two bolted outside, but one man decided to fight, a struggle which apparently lasted for more than ten minutes. And that’s when Vasquez’s mother showed up packing her licensed thirty-eight revolver. Debbie Vasquez says the attacker left her son and started toward her, and she reacted, pulling the trigger. When it was all over, the burglar had been shot twice, once his ankle and the other in his derriere. Frank Smith is now under police guard at the K.H.M.H. receiving treatment for his injuries. Police say he will be charged with aggravated burglary.
