Families Displaced by Hurricane Earl to Get Housing

Belize continues to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of Hurricane Earl, and here in the Belize District at least twenty-two families who have spent weeks of their lives in shelters can expect to come home – to a permanent home – by the end of the month. Thousands were affected when the category one hurricane swept through Belize in August.  Alpuche today explained what they are doing to assist families.

“We have been working with displaced persons as a part of the NEMO structure that we are, particularly focusing on people who had nowhere to go and we had to help them to move from the shelters. A lot of people who lost their house or had their houses damaged could double or triple with families, but there were others who had absolutely nowhere to go. So in the first instance, we had worked with them in renting spaces, renting alternate housing for them and then also working with the NEMO system to ensure repairs or in some cases replacements. So I was just informed yesterday, as a matter of fact, that at the end of the month right here in September that all the families who were impacted, who were completely displaced, will be moving back into more permanent housing.”
