Simon Quan fire caused by welding sparks
Fire investigators have sifted through the debris left in the wake of Tuesday evening’s fire at the Simon Quan warehouse on New Road. Their determination: it was a construction accident. According to Fire Chief Henry Baizar, sparks from welding works being carried out inside the building ignited some foam material and mattresses. Baizar believes that the fire was burning for some time before smoke from the blaze alerted a team of fire officials who happened to be passing by the area. Quick work by the fire department limited the damage to only part of the merchandize in the sprawling warehouse and no other buildings were affected. Two female employees of Simon Quan were trapped inside the burning building and had to be rescued by fire fighters and treated for smoke inhalation. Baizar estimated that the establishment did not suffer major loss and says the heaviest damage was caused by smoke and water. The building and its contents were insured.
