Senate Meets on Friday to Consider Select Committee on Immigration

The Government of Belize has announced that on Friday, September thirtieth, there will be a meeting of the Senate at the National Assembly in Belmopan. The sole order of business is expected to be the establishment and composition of the Senate Select Committee to investigate the Immigration and Nationality Special Audits on the table of the House of Representatives. However, there are rival motions to be presented on this topic. The People’s United Party had presented the motion to open an investigation, but it was defeated at the last meeting when Senator for the Churches Ashley Rocke switched his vote. We have been reliably informed that the motion will be brought back after a suspension of the standing orders. But News Five has also learned that Senator Rocke, with the support of the Government side, is to present a motion for a narrower focus for the Committee, to look only at the Audit Reports and not a wider investigation of the entire department. News Five will be there and have full details in Friday’s newscast.
