They’re among the top academic performers in the country; but more than just book-worms, students of Saint John’s Junior College want to show the community they also know how to have fun. And the outlet for the expression of their talents will be a unique Mr-Miss S.J.C. competition. Pageant organizer Dejon Tucker says the mix of brains and beauty that will take to the stage on Friday night will also highlight social issues affecting young people.

“Well they will be coming out in their professional wear and then they’re going to showcase talent, beachwear, sportswear, and the evening gown, and the final question.”

“Now what is the overall objective of, what do you hope to achieve by putting on a pageant like this?”

Dejon Tucker

“Well the main objective is to bring awareness to the social issues affecting young people today, because in our society today we have a lot of problems. For example poverty, teenage pregnancy, and the lack of education. And that are some of the main reasons why we’re going to have this pageant. So that we can bring all of those things into awareness so that our Belizean community can know that these are what’s happening to our young people. And the young people of S.J.C. Junior College will be talking about this and portraying this with our pageant tomorrow night.”

Nine contestants, five women and four men will compete in the pageant which will be staged at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts on Friday night. Tickets at eight dollars general admission and twelve reserved are on sale from S.J.C. Junior College. At the door on the night of the pageant, entrance fees will be ten dollars and fifteen dollars respectively.
