Teachers Will Continue Community Service and Public Education Campaign

Luke Palacio

So while they will be out of school once more, the teachers will not be idle. According to B.N.T.U. National President Luke Palacio, the teaching corps will be hitting the streets to continue their public education campaign and perform community service.

Luke Palacio, National President, B.N.T.U.

“We want to announce publicly that on Tuesday as a part of our strike action, our teachers will be engaged in community service projects as well as a public relations campaign as we make it known that demands that we are making on the Government of Belize is for the national good. It is for children yet unborn; it is as we continue to stand up for Belize to say to the government that it is time that you listen to the people. We did not elect persons to be rulers; we elected them so that they could govern in a matter that would be beneficial to all our citizens and that cry continues to go out loud and clear. And I am certain that based on the kind of support that we are seeing throughout this country, the country is fully behind the move of the Belize National Teachers’ Union.”

In case you were wondering who sang the Punta version of the track heard during Thursday’s marches and rallies, a mix of the Union’s two anthems “Solidarity Forever” and “We Shall Not Be Moved”, it is the singer Method, formerly of the Sweet Pain Band and now with the X Band. The song was played during this evening’s press briefing, with the Council’s members singing and in some cases, dancing along in their seats.
