Second suspect arrested in 2003 vendor shooting

Seven months after the senseless shooting of a tacos vendor for apparently no other reason than she did not have enough money to satisfy her attackers, police on Monday arrested a second person in connection with the incident. Eighteen-year-old Saddick Cecil Castillo joins Frank Smith, charged for the crimes of attempted murder, dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm. The duo is accused of shooting forty-one year old Gabriela Garcia as she sold food near the Plum Tree taxi stand on the morning of August fourth, 2003. The men reportedly demanded money from Garcia, but she told them that she had already turned in the proceeds of her sales and that all she had on her was seventy-five cents. They apparently grew angry and one of the young men is said to have told Garcia to have more money next time… and then shot her. Garcia, who was treated at the K.H.M.H., has since recovered from her wounds.

Police credit information received on the 922 hotline for leading to the capture of Castillo.
