Police Trying to Close in on Daniel Arzu Jr.’s Shooter
Five people are being questioned in connection with Monday’s shooting that has left Coast Guard Daniel Arzu Junior fighting for his life in the hospital. Police say they are almost sure they have picked up the man who pulled the trigger. But they are still waiting for written statements that would help them to nail the gunman. On Tuesday, we told you how Arzu Junior was shot inside an apartment as he was visiting his child’s mother. His father, Daniel Arzu Senior, Officer Commanding Benque Viejo Police told us on Tuesday that they were going to seek medical attention abroad. Today, his colleague ACP Chester Williams gave us an update on the shooting:
ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South
“The latest prognosis I got from the father just about fifteen minutes ago, I had a talk with him and I must say I will be visiting with him very shortly. He told me that the doctors at the hospital had informed him that Daniel Arzu Junior is responding well to the medication and the swelling of his brain is going down. So, as we speak arrangement is being made to have him transferred to the Naval Hospital in Mexico where they believe he will get better treatment for the injuries that he sustained. We remain optimistic that he will pull through and Mister Arzu is one of us and we will do what we can in that regard to get him to Mexico. I am sure that the Coast Guard through the support of Admiral Borland are doing their best from their end to ensure that he goes to Mexico and get the treatment that they believe he rightly deserves.”

“Any update as it relates to the police investigation?”
ACP Chester Williams
“The police investigation, we have a total of five persons in custody that we are interviewing. We are almost sure that we have the shooter. But we always have that hurdle where people are reluctant to give written statement to the police in terms of their observations during the commission of any crime. We are hoping that we will be able to get someone who can give us their version of the story in writing and that way we can have something of evidential value on which we can effect an arrest in relation to that matter. We continue to work on the investigation. It is a crime just like any other crime that we want to solve. We will do what we can do in that regard. I have been keeping Mr. Arzu posted and he understands the challenges of policing inn Belize City. So, we will see where we go from there.”

“Are you any closer to a motive?”
ACP Chester Williams
“Still, still baffling to try and get a motive. Like I said before, when a person is of such a character as he is; not being involved in a gang or criminal activities, it is difficult to ascertain a motive when things occur to them. Normally, robbery would be a motive but we do not think that robbery was the motive in this case.”
