Government Celebrates “Vindication” on Takeover
Financial Secretary Joseph Waight welcomes the Supreme Court ruling, despite being uncertain whether an appeal will be filed in the days ahead.
Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary
“I’ll have to say that it is good news for the government, it is a position we maintained all along. We are glad that the court found it in our way and we will see what happens next. We don’t know what the claimant, what the next move will be but for now we are very satisfied with the ruling and we think it vindicates our position.”
Isani Cayetano
“The Government of Belize has been engaged in a protracted legal battle with the Ashcroft Group, if I may, and this was one of them. It’s a victory at this particular juncture for the Government of Belize. Do you feel a sense of satisfaction that of all the cases that have been taken on the government has emerged victorious in this particular instance?”
Joseph Waight
“Well we are satisfied at this point in time but we are not sure what the next move will be. This is only the first level of the court system; we’re not sure what the claimants will do. It’s possible that they may go higher, they may appeal, I don’t know. It’s their call.”
In a release issued earlier today, the Government of Belize says, “It amounted to a scandalous diversion of monies that could only properly have gone into the Consolidated Revenue Fund, and is yet another instance of the corruption that accompanied all the P.U.P. secret deals.”
