Another milestone for Miss Viola

Story Picture
To a nation that has become far too used to crime and violence, she stands out as a shining example of what our newscast could be without the usual diet of murder, robbery, and political controversy. And today one of our most durable Belizeans is celebrating one more year in the jewel. Jacqueline Woods was on hand to help celebrate.

Since Viola Myles woke up she has been receiving calls and visits throughout the day from friends and well-wishers complimenting her on her one hundred and first birthday.

Myles says she never believed that she would have lived this long and did not forget to thank the man who she says is responsible for her longevity.

“I got on my knees and I asked the Lord and thanked him, first of all and smiled.”

Myles has also made it a tradition to share that happiness. Each birthday she bakes a cake and gives it to neighbours and friends. Myles, who lives on her own, enjoys taking walks and tending to her plants. She believes that because she uses the Bible as her guide she has been able to deal with tragedies that have been a part of her lifetime journey.

“The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear. The Lord is the strength of my life, whom shall I be afraid.”

In 1998 she was crowned Miss Y and she has also been recognised for her dedicated service to the Wesley Women’s League and Salvation Army. Myles says her health has been good, but she suffers from some ailments that come with old age.

“I noh remember everything and I don’t expect to remember everything at my age. And today I smiled and said to the Lord, thank you God for saving me, keeping me.”

Today she continues to inspire many who marvel at her zeal. Myles say she has only one birthday wish for the public and that is…

“Live right with God. Live your life over. Forget trash because the world has nothing to give you. I gave me life to the Lord from I was twenty-three.”

This evening Myles was treated to a birthday bash hosted by the YWCA.
