Dangriga Will Be Safe for Garifuna Settlement Weekend, Say Police

Ralph Moody

The murder of Victoria Castillo, the sixty-three year old churchgoing Christian mother and grandmother, who was nearly decapitated by attackers who wanted her money—about three thousand dollars in cash—for their own purposes, has put a damper on the run-up to Garifuna Settlement Day festivities in Dangriga. But on Monday, the regional commander of the Southern Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Ralph Moody, sought to assure both residents and visitors to the Culture Capital that they should feel safe. He points to major crimes being sharply reduced in the last two years.

Sr. Supt. Ralph Moody, Regional Commander, Southern Police Division

“I must say that we are getting ourselves ready for the 19th; [our] police officers are out there, we are very vigilant, we are doing operations, and we want to ensure that the residents of Dangriga and surroundings have a pleasant 19th. We might have that incident occur but we are not as bad as how the incident look. I must say that our crime statistic is way, way down; we are having a twenty-five point five percent reduction in major crime, and we are beating last year statistics – last year we had a nine point eight [percent] reduction in major crime.”
