Queen Square, St. Peter Claver win basketball finals
Good evening, I’m James Adderley with this latest issue of Sports Monday. Week eight of the B.P.F.L. B League took us right back to the Sandhill Field where the Belize Rural All Stars hosted Lazio of Orange Walk on Sunday.
From the opening whistle the Stars go offensive and on this first press come up with two scoring opportunities that eventually culminates with the offside call.
At the other end, Lazio gets its chance to open the scoreboard first. Reynaldo Narvallez’s left foot shot leaves a lot to be described. However, it doesn’t take long for the scoreboard to move as Jermaine Zuniga launches this undivided effort that concludes with a 1-zip lead for the Rural Stars some ten minutes in.
Lazio tries to respond with this shot from Reynaldo Narvallez, but apparently he can’t find the goal today. Make it three misses in a row when Narvallez fails to convert on this left foot launch. Again it’s Lazio on the attack, and again they come away empty-handed when they could have been on the scoreboard.
By the way Charles Tillett, you’re open teammates do have a right to be mad at you. Nevertheless, at the other end Orland Lyons slams this left foot past the goalkeeper to make it a 2-nil Rural lead.
Still, when a Rural defender takes out Charles Tillett, referee Wilhelm White rules penalty. Lazio sends for Raynan Jimenez, who steps up to the penalty box and comes up with a conversion to make it a 2-1 score at the half.
After intermission things go downhill for Lazio, Eden “Yellowman” Rawley fires from outside, the keeper can’t handle, Terrence Madril streaks in and the Stars go up 3-1.
Here’s another fumble by the Lazio keeper, but Jermaine Zuniga unleashes a high riser as if applying for a pilot’s license. And, yes, Mr. Narvallez, we do know that frustration ain’t no fun, but c’est la vie.
Goal number four comes when Roy Tillett handles this centre and smacks it into the far corner as Belize Rural All Stars settle for the 4-1 big W.
In other results from the weekend Kremandala edged Hattieville 2-1, and Caye Caulker clobbered Youth for the Future 4-zip.
Now let’s head to the People’s Stadium O.W. where the National Primary School Basketball finals was staged over the weekend. We join the female finals featuring St. Peter Claver of Toledo in action against St. Alphonsus of Seine Bight.
We must say the Toledo girls are just too much for their Seine Bight counterpart. Off this Trisha Brooks miss Rashak Guzman picks up the pill and goes all the way. St. Peter Claver would take the title in an 18-6 rout.
Meanwhile, the male finals matches Queen’s Square Anglican of Belize City in action against St. Peter Claver of Toledo. Frank Lopez finds Elvis Carrillo who lights it up for two points. Of course St. Peter Claver has its own go-to man number and twenty-one Frank Lopez shows off his range.
It’s a close ballgame all the way, so let’s fast-forward to the big finish and here is Keith Allan giving his team a 24-22 point lead in money time.
Queen’s Square needs a three point shot to win. They go to Sherrick Trapp and he lifts his school to the 25-24 big W with this three-pointer and we say congratulations to the two champions and all the participants in this tournament.
In cycling news, Mateo Cruz took top honours in Saturday’s Boom circuit race, Ernest Meighan pulled up second, Marlon Castillo third, Giovanni Leslie fourth, while Mark Staine rounds out the top five.
We certainly take this opportunity to remind you that the Valentine’s Cycle Classic comes up this weekend February fifteenth. You won’t want to miss it.
In closing, we want you to meet the new Cayo Amateur Softball Assn. Bernard Lemott is President; Kent Fuller, Vice President; Secretary is Delvorine Smith; Treasurer Antonia Cawich; and members are Estella Crawford, Joyce Mendoza and Desiree Flowers.
That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
