Fire Service Prepares for Busy Christmas Season with Handy Tips
Garifuna Settlement Day leads right into the Christmas Holidays. The season is just a few weeks away and lights have started going up on houses and businesses. The Fire Service says that as the season kicks in, we must be careful with electrical wires and cooking in our homes so as to avoid fires. While they are set to launch their fire safety tips in another three weeks, Operations Officer Benisford Matura has some early Christmas safety advice for those who will be celebrating:
Benisford Matura, Operations Officer, National Fire Service
“Again, I will stress and preach to the public at large, once you have young children in your home, please have an adult monitoring them all the time. As you know a lot of fires involve children as of late. And into the Christmas season, we stress again that if you are going to put up lights and have other electrical stuff, make sure you have the proper wiring for your dwelling. And also when the cooking starts, make sure that there isn’t one person doing the cooking; make sure that at least two persons doing the cooking so that they can keep each other company mean while all this cooking is being done. This will help to alleviate or minimize some of the fire calls that we will have to attend. We will also have a launch of our pamphlets and more fire safety tips in about mid-December.”
