Riviera Neighbourhood Gets Facelift from Belmopan Police

In the Garden City earlier today, Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett also led a team of police officers and inmates from the Belize Central Prison in a cleanup campaign that saw the cutting down of trees and the clearing of the central walkway in the Rivera area.  The initiative was a collaborative effort between the Belize Police Department, the Belmopan City Council and the Kolbe Foundation.  In other related news from the capital, the local police station is preparing to install a one-way mirror which will be used for identification parades.  According to the Officer Commanding Belmopan Police, the existing circumstances for the recognition of suspects are challenging since witnesses would physically need to approach suspects in order to positively identify them.  As a result, many cases have fallen apart because witnesses were fearful of participating in an ID parade.  It is the hope that with an observation device in place, the identity of witnesses can be protected and the conviction rate will increase.
