Police initiate officer of the month award

Story Picture
He’s only been on the force a year and seven months, but today Police Constable Horace Portillo walked away with a newly instituted “Officer of the Month” award. Commissioner of Police Jose Carmen Zetina says it’s the desire of the department that Portillo’s zeal and attitude towards his job will rub off on the rest of his colleagues. For his part, Portillo says the honour didn’t come as a total surprise, but it has given him reason to be proud.

Horace Portillo, Officer of the Month

“Oh yeah, give me a whole lot of courage. Just go and do my job. It’s about time for me on performance… Just my performance, as a police officer twenty-four seven, there were several arrests that I made out there off duty and also on duty. I want my fellow colleagues to go and be careful how they are on the street. Just be careful how they approach prisoners, there is a lot of dangerous prisoners on the streets. Just got to be careful.”

Jose Carmen Zetina, Commissioner of Police

“Well it’s something which the department in conjunction with the Ministry is considering as from now on, that every month we’re going to select among all members of the department, as the best officer that should be given the police officer of the month award. In addition to a certificate that will be given to the individual, an award of two hundred dollars financial award will be given to the policeman.”

“What’s the objective of the award?”

Jose Carmen Zetina

“Well it’s a matter of motivating the police officers that in addition of their hard work, some award can be considered in addition to that.”

The twenty-seven year old law enforcement officer is currently attached to the Patrol Branch and is assigned to mobile patrol. With the officer of the month award now added to his resume, Portillo says he is looking forward to earning his stripes as Corporal.
