Boxing comes alive at City Centre
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’ve just made that connection with this latest issue of Sports Monday. Week seven of the B.P.F.L.’s B League competition brought Creative Tiles of Ladyville and Lazio of Orange Walk to the Sandhill Field on Sunday in a battle for three points.
Folks, we’re just about five minutes in when Lazio captain Rene Hernandez fires this right-away right foot long distance bomb that crashes behind a diving Elias Hercules to give O.W. a quick 1-zip lead.
Of course, Creative Tiles tries to come right back, but brute force at times is somewhat counterproductive, right guys? Meanwhile, this steal by Cecelio Westby leads to a wicked left foot shot from Reynaldo Navallez and just like that Lazio is up 2-nil early.
However, five minute later this pass is filtered to number five Lorenzo Diaz, who turns on it with power and Creative Tiles gets onto the scoreboard.
Make it a 2-all ballgame when Enjer Hercules’s centre ricochets to Thedran Reid-well no, not exactly. It is voided by the handball, and as you can see the referee assistant motions. Less than two minutes later Carlos Cawich raises this centre into the danger zone and Lorenzo Diaz catches up with it to give Ladyville 2-2 first half tie.
On this press, Diaz looks for the hat trick with this right foot touch, but the ball inches outside the far upright and at the half it’s still a 2-2 ballgame.
So we go to the second half, and I must ask you–how could Creative Tiles not come up with a conversion right here? I guess they’re cruising right about now.
Adolfo Hernandez then fires from outside to give Corozal the 3-2 lead, but his offering sails wide. For Ladyville, Creative Tile’s goal number three and four comes from the books of Albert Thurton who slices this pass perfectly to give his team the 4-2 lead, but we must confess we missed his scoring goal number three.
Folks, give goalkeeper Hercules the assist as Thedran Reid out runs the entire Lazio defence to score into an empty goal as Ladyville Creative Tiles goes on to post the 5-2 big W.
In other results from around the league, Hattieville clobbered Youth for the Future 4-1; A.F.C. crushed Kremandala 3-1; Caye Caulker and A.C. Milan struggled to a scoreless draw; Delta Sport sunk Corozal strikers 2-zip; Yabra United defaulted to Belize Rural All Stars.
Now let’s head to the City Centre where yesterday the Belize Amateur Boxing Association presented its first card under new President Yoli Fonseca. Maybe the event could have been better advertised, but let’s head to the action.
In the opening bout, one hundred and ten pound Douglas Gill is obviously a superior and heavier fighter than one hundred and three pound Damien Lockwood and easily gets the unanimous decision from the judges.
At one hundred and thirty-five pounds, the problem with the headgears begins to get serious. We’re still in the first round when this wicked left hand lands on Tyrone Philips as Edwin Gillette takes the TKO in impressive fisticuff fashion.
At one hundred and nineteen pound, Simeon Lino must be singing my jab is better than yours. And in fact it is as the judges give Lino the unanimous decision over Nigel Stanford.
Meanwhile folks, the fight at one hundred and forty-five pounds between Edwardo Babb of Orange Walk and Max Williams of Belize City proved to be a beauty. Williams demonstrates total domination in the first round, forcing two eight-counts on Babb. However, the judges ruled that Babb did enough in the next two rounds to take the controversial decision from Williams and the blue corner is upset.
In the meantime, meet Carlton Bowers, a boxer from the past showing his pugilistic skills after challenging Murphy McLaren to a fight. We won’t have to hold our breaths.
In the final bout of the day, the action was marred by the failure of the brand new headgears to stay in position. Here’s another headgear incident that forces another unnecessary stoppage, so we go back to the old headgears and they certainly do a better job. People, it might have been this wicked straight right that made the difference in this fight–because when the decision came Kelvin Thor Middleton gets the win over our boy Moses.
That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
