Police Contribute to Persons with Disabilities

A team of officers and civilian employees attached to Eastern Division North ran across Belize City this morning to raise funds for children with diverse abilities.  The relay kicked off from the Fort George Memorial Park and made its way through the main streets of the Old Capital before changing its torchbearer while en route to the Benny’s roundabout on the Phillip Goldson Highway.  Primary school students lined the streets on the north side of the city and cheered the runners on.  Among them, the children of All Saints School who were able to raise much needed monies to donate to the cause.  News Five spoke with Inspector Fitzroy Yearwood, Public Relations Officer at Eastern Division North.

“This is the fifth annual law enforcement torch run and it’s in support of children born with disabilities.  We have police officers, police personnel and our civilian staff as well have joined us with some students and we have ran through the principal streets in Eastern Division North.  Up ahead we have the torch that will be passed on to O.C.E.D. North Assistant Commissioner Phillips and then she will do the final leg up to the Benny’s roundabout.  We have persons running along with some cans for donation and we have seen tremendous support from our schools, especially All Saints, who brought out a whole lot of students to support us and they have done collections, YWCA likewise, and other schools along our route.  As you can see, it’s an energetic run and we hope next year that it will be bigger and we’ll get more support from the business community.”

“Now, is this something that carries a different theme annually or is this fixed for people with disabilities?”

“It is fixed as a law enforcement torch run.  All donations and proceeds we give to children with disabilities.  If you go on our Facebook page the emblem is up there.  We have the south side yesterday and we know that the other parts of the country, the other districts they also participated.   We know that the funds are collected and it will be calculated through community policing who organized the run and hopefully we can increase every year and maybe then we can begin to branch out.”
