U.B. and San Carlos to host conference
On Saturday British Foreign Office Minister responsible for Latin America and the Caribbean, Bill Rammell, presented a cheque for one hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars to finance an international conference on conflict prevention, human rights, and economic integration. The conference, co-hosted by the University of Belize and San Carlos University of Guatemala, is the first of its kind between the two nations. At the ceremony, representatives from both countries were upbeat on what results the effort will bring.
Dr. Luis Leal Monteroso, Rector, San Carlos University
“This event will increase our brotherhood because Central America and the Caribbean region unite in the era of globalisation will make us stronger and will allow us to demand the respect of our rights and ask for better prices for our exportations. And we are going to show again to our governments that without education there is not going to be development for our societies.”
Prime Minister Said Musa
“I believe that this relationship that will emerge–this stronger relationship between San Carlos and the University of Belize–will serve very much to build up that understanding and mutual respect: the two essential ingredients I believe that will lead us to resolve all conflicts and potential conflicts between our countries, and indeed to assist in the resolution of conflicts throughout Central American and our Latin American Region.”
The conference will be held in March at the University of Belize.
