Belizeans’ New Year’s Resolutions

With New Year’s Eve just hours away, everyone starts making their resolutions – a tradition where a person makes a promise to themselves to fulfill throughout the year. Whether it is to lose weight or to be a better person, the pledge differs with each individual. So today in downtown Belize City, News Five’s Duane Moody and intern Maria-Isabel Reneau went out to ask Belizeans if they have any New Year’s resolution; many took the opportunity to send greetings out to their family and friends.

 

Resident #1

“I want to say a special new year’s to my children, to my sisters, to my brothers, my special friends, [and] to my coworkers.”

“Now you know people always talk about for the New Year, they are going to lose some weight or there’s something they will change. Do you have any New Year’s resolution for 2017?”

 

Resident #1

“My New Year resolution is that I want my daughter get a house, because her house mi burn down. So I hope she get a house for the New Year. I wish my grandchildren a happy New Year and to everyone in Belize City.”

 

Resident #2

“I want to say happy New Year to my friends and my family; may they have the best year.”

 

Reporter

“You have any New Year resolution for 2017?”

 

Resident #2

“Well I will be a changed woman; I noh know about dehn.”

 

Resident #3

“I’d like to big up my brothers, my family, my aunt, uncles. Mi bredda dah Cayo, all mi auntie dehn and mi cousin; mi nephew and mi niece dehn – I can’t forget none of them. And I di big up mi son, one son JR.”

 

Resident #4

“I’d like to say a happy New Year to my mother, my father, my little brother and my coworkers.”

 

Reporter

“And you have any New Year resolution?”

 

Resident #4

“Not really. I guess just trying to be a better person, whatever that means.”

 

Resident #5

“Just to my wife and my friends; that’s all I got to say.”

 

Reporter

“You have any New Year’s resolution?”

 

Resident #5

“Well all I gonna do is lose some weight cause the weight killing me right now.”

 

Resident #6

“I want to big up my mother, Misses Estella Grant; happy New Year. And my sister, my twin sister, her birthday is tomorrow—me and she—we are going to be forty-five years old. I want to big up all my children, my coworkers, my whole family and friends. Happy New Year.”

“And you have any New Year resolution?”

 

Resident #6

“I want stop…when I deh dah church right, I want stop curse and different things; be a good person. Well I done good, but be the best with that.”
