Fashion calendar features models, clothes
In the past few weeks we have previewed the Belikin Calendar, the PACT calendar, the CLICO calendar and even the Belizean Jewels calendar. Tonight my colleague, Patrick Jones had the assignment of checking out the latest entry in the crowded field: the Fashion calendar.

Six beautiful models, including designer Melenie Matus herself, adorn the pages of Belize’s first Fashion Calendar. Matus says after attending fashion school in New York, she decided to come back home two and a half years ago.

“Since fashion is my field, about six months ago I decided you know, why not do something to showcase what I can do. And I started out drawing my designs on papera. And after that one thing led to next and the calendar got made.”
Each model appears twice in the calendar. And the clothes they are wearing are all from Matus’ collection.

“This first line will be EVANJAY, my first line. And then we’re going to take it from there and see what happens. But this is really just a project on the side and I have to thank my brother Roque Matus for giving me the time off to kind of like work on this on the side.”
“My fabrics were bought in New York. So I had to go to the fashion district in New York. It was cold, I was there with mittens, and everything walking down Broadway, going from fabric store to fabric store until I found something that I liked. Because I had the design, I had the idea in my head, but I had to find the fabric to match.”
After the right fabric was chosen, the seamstress went to work fitting the models… and then photographer Jeremy Spooner took over.

“Totally Belizean thing, the background, the women, the designer, everything is Belizean. Please support the calendar; it’s a good thing. My models look just as if though they stepped out of Vogue Magazine. I mean they are all beautiful, they are gorgeous, they compliment my dresses.”
No argument here… Patrick Jones, for News 5.
The calendars sell for twenty dollars each and are available at various outlets in Belize City. The graphics were produced by Dolphin Productions of Belize City and the calendar printed in Guatemala. Looking way ahead, Matus says the 2005 edition will be bigger and much more flamboyant.
