Abandoned drug plane found in Toledo

Story Picture
Another mysterious airplane has been discovered in Belize, this time in a remote corner of the Toledo District. According to police, the burnt out wreckage of a twin engine Cessna was discovered on Tuesday near the settlement of Happy Home along the Sarstoon River. That river forms the boundary between Belize and Guatemala. Sources in Punta Gorda tell News 5 that about two weeks ago an area of pasture had been cleared to make the landing possible. Following the touchdown, residents report that the sound of vehicles could be heard coming from across the river in Guatemala. About an hour and a half later, an explosion rang out and the plane was consumed by fire. As in virtually all cases, neither the occupants nor any sign of the cargo have been found. The sparsely populated border area, with its many creeks and dense jungle, has become a favourite location for the transhipment of cocaine from Colombia en route to the United States.
