3 Guatemalans charged in Xunantunich attack
Three men have been arrested and charged in connection with Sunday’s attack on two tourists at the ancient Maya site of Xunantunich. Twenty-year old Angel Mejia, Jose Teul, also twenty, and a seventeen year old minor, have been charged with aggravated assault, attempted robbery, grievous harm, and various firearm offences. The three are all Guatemalans of Melchor de Mencos. Dutch backpackers Alwin Klanderman and his cousin, Edith ter Maat, were assaulted as they walked the road from the ruins to the ferry on Sunday morning. Klanderman was seriously wounded with a machete when he bravely resisted his attackers’ attempts to make them walk deeper into the jungle.
