Contract signed for Caracol road upgrade

It’s not a thoroughfare that carries much traffic, but on the theory that “if you build it, they will come” government has signed a contract for major improvements in the road to the ancient Maya site of Caracol. The upgrading of six miles of road and paving of another nine point two miles will be carried out by Cisco Construction at a cost of five point one million dollars. Loan financing was provided by the Inter-American Development Bank and Taiwan’s International Cooperation and Development Fund. Caracol is Belize’s largest archaeological site and has been extensively excavated and consolidated for the benefit of visitors. The upgrade of the road will provide a top class attraction that can be marketed to high value overnight tourists who will no longer have to compete with thousands of cruise ship passengers swarming over more accessible sites like Altun Ha and Xunantunich.
