Toledo Alcaldes Also Elect New President, Plan Strategy

At the time of the swearing-in ceremony, Santiago Quib was chosen by the majority to ascend to the presidency of the TAA.  The Maya community also acknowledges the support given in recognizing the authority of the Maya traditional governance.  According to Mis, each Alcalde renewed his commitment to work to further strengthening the relationship with the state.

“There’s a total of seventy-eight Alcaldes representing the thirty-nine communities; however, today only seventy-six of those Alcaldes were sworn in as the election for Alcaldes for Big Falls is pending.  And the newly elected representatives in their presentation to the assembly of leaders committed their efforts to ensure that there is continuity in the work that the Toledo Alcaldes Association has over the years been pushing forward.  There’s also a commitment from the newly elected executives to strengthen partnership and collaboration with the relevant offices that work very closely with the Alcaldes association, including the police department, the Ministry of Rural Development, in particular the village council as a renewed commitment on the part of the executives to aggressively pursue and bridging a healthy partnership with the different entities because often there are conflicts, there are differences in perspectives with respect to issues affecting the communities.  It is important and imperative upon the association that they actively pursue bridging the differences between these different offices.”
