Belize City Police Lock Down Possible Undocumented Workers

A group of laborers, presumably from other countries within Central America, was rounded up by Belize City police this morning at a construction site of Golden Bay on Marine Parade. Police we’re told were looking for a gang members attached to the recently escaped Mara Salvatrucha from a jail in Salvador.  Sometime before eleven o’clock, officers descended on the location and detained as more than a dozen workers.  The men were then placed into the pan of a pair of pickup trucks and taken to the Queen Street precinct where they were all processed.  Ordinarily, the herding of undocumented laborers by law enforcement succeeds information on related immigration offences.  Up to news time tonight, it remains unclear whether the men were arraigned at the Magistrate’s Court.  Likewise, we have not been able to determine if their employer has also been detained.
