“A King is Born” debuts in Belmopan

Payday at the end of November has traditionally marked the unofficial kick-off of the Christmas season in Belize, at least the shopping season. But in case anyone was wondering, Christmas is about more than new curtains and marley. One such reminder comes in the form of an unusual dance presentation this weekend in the nation’s capital.

Joe Yeager, Director, “A King Is Born”

“A King is Born” is the Christmas story, but it’s set a little bit differently. We use a lot of dance throughout the whole thing, and we use a fusion of dances, so it’s not just classical ballet pieces, it’s not just modern pieces, and not just jazz; but everything is woven together. So the telling of the story goes along with the movement and we use different music styles as well, so it’s not like a classical story telling like Nutcracker all the way through. So it’s something there for every member of the family and for young and old all the way through. The story of Christ and the birth of Christ is what this is really about. We all need someone in our lives who is just a little bit bigger than us to help us over the hurdles and the Christmas story is something that has spanned thousands of years.”

“A King is Born” will be performed on Saturday at the Belmopan Civic Centre at seven p.m. Tickets can be bought at the Art Box Gallery on the Hummingbird Highway for ten dollars for adults, five dollars for children.
