PACT, Angelus Press promote new calendar

Story Picture
It’s that time when our thoughts turn to Christmas and the days that lay beyond. If your mind is straying toward 2004, News 5’s Patrick Jones has a suggestion.

When the new year rolls around, Belizeans at home and abroad will have an attractive way to keep track of important dates, while at the same time learning about the rich natural resources of the country. It’s the PACT 2004 Calendar and Valerie Woods is the organisation’s Executive Director.

“This particular year you will notice that the cover of the calendar is marine. And that’s because at PACT we’re trying to make sure that we promote the right balance between the marine protected areas as well as terrestrial. Last year we did a lot of the terrestrial inland areas; this year you will notice whale sharks in there, marine reserves, the fish and so forth. And that’s basically what we are trying to do, each year just to constantly balance and rotate the interest.”

Woods says it was the tremendous interest and overwhelming response to last year’s publication that pushed the Protected Areas Conservation Trust to issue another edition of the hugely popular calendar.

“We have a variety of the wildlife species, as well as the actual protected areas which PACT has been working with for several years now. And of course, we have some shots of people who interact with these areas because at PACT we’re trying to promote conservation yes, but making sure people are at the centre of this as well.”

This year the role of the Angelus Press, which printed the calendars, was elevated from that of contractor to a full partner in the business venture. Sales Manager for the stationary and office supply giant, Glory Hernandez, says the calendar represents over two months of collaborative work between Angelus Press and PACT.

“We’re doing it because of the kind of feedback that we want the community to get. We know that PACT is an organization that works towards conservation and making people, educate them to the awareness of this. And so we thought that it was a privilege and an honour to work with such an organisation where we would do something that would be able to enable funds for them to continue the project.”

But the calendar is not the only joint project of the Angelus Press-PACT partnership. Hernandez says the public can look forward to more exciting products.

“We are also producing a 2004 exercise book series. Last year Angelus Press produced one with the Philatelic Department, which is the post office with the stamps. We did a stamp collection series, and this year we’re going to do a PACT exercise book series depicting the different conservation areas and wildlife series.”

Those exercise books will be ready by the middle of next year. Patrick Jones, for News 5.

The 2004 calendars are available exclusively from the Angelus Press. Proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be reinvested into protected areas through PACT’s grant programmes.
