Sports Council Makes Upgrades at Facilities in Belize City

The National Sports Council under the new leadership of Interim Executive Director, Charlie Slusher, and in conjunction with the Queen Square Community has given a facelift to a sporting facility in that south side constituency represented by the Prime Minister. The basketball court, like many other recreational spaces and pitches across the Old Capital, was abandoned and in need of renovations. That area is gang infested and that puts children at risk. This afternoon, Slusher told News Five, that the council sprung into action at the request of a resident. He also spoke of works being done at the MCC Grounds and the Marion Jones Sporting Complex.

“The place is dark, it is very dangerous; it is close to a school and area and so right away we didn’t even worry about the area. We went to the location and examined it and we told them the next day that we gonna fix it and so we changed all the lights and gave them new lights to ensure that the place has enough lights and can be utilized by the kids within the neighborhood. Simultaneously right now at the Marion Jones, we have a bulldozer doing a landscaping in front of the track trying to beautify the place. As well as at the MCC for the first time I think in a long period of time, the teams that play there every other day will now have a decent locker room to be in before the game and I think those are some of the stuff…The public bathroom that was there for the fans and thing has had a total makeover and is usable right now and I think that we will continue to do some of these works. I think we at the Ministry and Sports Council try to do our best to promote sports and as long as it has to do with sports we have to do our best.”
