An Official Funeral for Catholic Bishop O.P. Martin

Bishop Emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church in Belize, the late Most Reverend Osmond Peter Martin, will be laid to rest next Monday, February twenty-seventh, following an official funeral service at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral in Belmopan. The Church accepted an offer from the Government to make it an official funeral, in recognition of Bishop Martin’s status as the first native Bishop of the Church. Viewing of his body will begin at two in the afternoon. Burial follows the service at three in the church yard of the co-cathedral. According to current Auxiliary Bishop of the Church Christopher Glancy, two memorial masses will be held for Bishop Martin. The first is at his home church, Sacred Heart Parish in Dangriga, at eleven a.m. on Sunday, February twenty-sixth, with viewing of the body beginning at ten-fifteen a.m.  The second takes place on the morning of the funeral at Holy Redeemer Cathedral in Belize City at nine a.m. viewing of the body beginning at eight a.m. Bishop Martin served from 1984 to 2007 and died on February sixteenth in Dangriga of natural causes.
