A.G. Says Deportation Not an Issue for Belize

Michael Peyrefitte

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, have begun deportation raids in support of new policy by the Donald Trump administration. Hundreds have been rounded up across the country and reports in international media suggest that Belizeans may be among them. When deportees come home via the Philip Goldson International Airport, they are typically met by members of the Gang Suppression Unit, with whom they must subsequently check in on a regular basis. But according to Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte, it is not yet a critical issue for the Government, though it is one they will monitor.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“It’s not reached the point where it is such an important policy consideration that we need to come up with something to address it.  No.  We have not been notified by any of our consuls or embassies abroad that it will become an issue.  But if it does, certainly we will find a way to address it.  It has not come as an urgent matter to consider.”
