Opposition also meets with OAS Sec-Gen, who calls for re-registration

Luis Almagro

The O.A.S. Secretary General, while in Belize City this morning, also made a brief visit to Independence Hall where he called on Leader of the Opposition John Briceño. Briceño we are told, did not know of the meeting in Guatemala between the foreign ministers, but he was reassured that the O.A.S. will continue to remain impartial in facilitating the dialogue between Belize and Guatemala, in the face of growing skepticism.

Luis Almagro, Secretary General, O.A.S.

“This morning, I met with the People’s United Party, party leader, the Honorable John Briceño and his advisory team and we discussed ways in which we can work together regarding a solution to their differences.  We would like both countries to be fully committed to this referendum, fully committed to consultations and for these consultations to be able to create mechanisms that can avoid incidents of any kind.  We would want, of course, the government of Guatemala to announce a date as soon as possible for their referendum and, of course, we would like the Government of Belize to start as soon as possible the re-registration in order to have the referendum here.  We are very pleased with the visit and we are very happy with what we have seen and the work that we have ahead is tough.  It’s not an easy way but it’s something that we are very committed to achieving positive results that those countries need.”
