Disabled benefit from British grant
Children who are afflicted with physical disabilities have a difficult time trying to live a normal life in Belize, and one reason is the lack of rehabilitation services. It’s one problem that CARE-Belize, a new non-governmental organisation, hopes to address. CARE stands for Community Agency for Rehabilitation and Education for persons with disabilities, and today that organisation received a handsome financial donation from the British High Commission. According to CARE-Belize Director, Dolores Godfrey, the fifty thousand dollars was essential for the accomplishment of the organisation’s key goals.

“As we have been working now for ten months, since January ’03, we have discovered that it is way beyond what we imagined it was. So we have for example in the Toledo District, maybe a hundred and fifty children that have been identified, and we can only give service to twenty-five of those.”
“Resources are very limited, so this donation from the British High Commission is really welcomed. It is a donation of fifty thousand dollars. CARE-Belize will use the donation for a prevention and community programme awareness programme in disabilities.”
The cheque was handed over to CARE-Belize by the British High Commissioner to Belize, Philip Priestly.
