Shop lifter promises not to steal again, spared jail

Carlos Vasquez

A shop lifter who was caught in Public’s Supermarket on Saturday stealing a ball of Dutch cheese was charged with theft and was luckily sentenced to a three-month suspended sentence. Carlos Vasquez of the Kings Park area in Belize City was also ordered to stay out of trouble for the next year or else he will have to go to jail. Vasquez, a father of two, claimed he had no money to feed his children so he stole the cheese this past Saturday. Vasquez was caught when the security guard reported that a customer had stolen the cheese off the shelf and was walking away. Vasquez told the court that the store manager denied him help so he stole the cheese but was remorseful for his action. After pleading guilty to the theft, he told the Senior Magistrate that if she sparred him jail time, he will never steal again. She imposed the three-month suspended sentence which means that for a one-year period, Vasquez cannot commit any offense or he will have to serve three months in jail.
