P.U.P.’s Francis Fonseca Says Government Can’t Hide Anymore
But the Opposition P.U.P. proved intractable, convinced that two Belizes exist and that they are further apart than ever before. Leading off the Budget Debate this morning, former Opposition Leader Francis Fonseca said the United Democratic Party has been exposed on all fronts and that they have no record to show for their time in office, never mind the last year. Fonseca challenged the U.D.P. to admit the truth of a sluggish economy and a lack of imagination and ideas – and that they cannot pull the wool over the eyes of the Belizean people any more.
Francis Fonseca, Area Rep., Freetown
“Show me your record; show me your record, worthless U.D.P. Streets and roundabouts – streets and roundabouts; that is your record. Madam Speaker, this 2017-2018 budget does nothing, nothing, to advance the interest of the Belizean people and our nation – nothing. The Belizean people are being asked to sacrifice, Madam Speaker – to make do with less, to tighten their belts, even as those on the other side along with their circle of family and friends, continue to roll and to live large. They have amassed land and houses; hustled money off our Belizean nationality, off contracts and the sale of public lands. But the game is up, Madam Speaker – they now stand naked before the Belizean people! (Applause) Crushed under the weight of their own arrogance; crushed under the weight of their own corruption and hypocrisy – no longer can they hide behind the millions of dollars. You see, Madam Speaker, the money done; the money done! No longer will they be allowed to fraudulently nationalize and register voters! (Applause) the sunlight is shining brightly on the Immigration Department and the eyes of the nation are watching. And Madam Speaker, let us put them on notice from today: they will not be allowed to engage in dirty tricks when it comes to re-registration and re-districting.”
