Energy Workers Harness Information
Stakeholders from across the energy sector are participating in a four-day seminar that is being facilitated by the Latin American Energy Organization, OLADE. The workshop focuses on the establishment of a database where information on energy usage and greenhouse gases emission will be gathered. That collection of information will then be made accessible to members of the public and private sectors for use in decision making. The conference is organized in part by the Ministry of Public Service, Energy and Public Utilities. Earlier today, we spoke with representatives from government and OLADE.
Paula Carrera, Coordinator, Info Mgmt., OLADE
“This workshop is called the National Energy Information System of Belize and the workshop is also included to all the stakeholders, the main stakeholders of the energy sector of Belize which in this case is hydrocarbons, electricity, renewable energy. So we are trying to get all of these stakeholders onboard in order to submit the data on a monthly basis and on an annual basis, so that to complete the energy chain from the energy flow of the energy sector of Belize and that information will be loaded into our system in order to develop energy balances, energy indicators and definitely greenhouse gases emissions inventory. We’re also collecting information regarding energy prices, energy infrastructure, reserves, potentials, additional information. And in terms of energy statistics that will be valuable to be loaded into the Belizean Energy Information System.”
Ryan Cobb, Energy Officer, Ministry of Energy
“What we’re trying to impart here is the establishing of an energy database that will serve as a statistical repository, not just of energy production but of energy resources so that most public and private sector can take this data and do analytical analysis on it and do policy decisions based on the data. So it’s data driving decision making.”

“In terms of the number of participants and the various stakeholder groups, what can you share in terms of those who are present?”
Ryan Cobb
“The people who are present here today are the major stakeholders, such as people from BELCOGEN, B.E.L. and private sector groups such as B.N.E. and other interested groups. They are here because they are the people who are actually going to be using the system directly. They are the people who can be inputting data into the system and extracting data from the system for their own analysis.”
The event which is being held at the Best Western Biltmore Plaza concludes on Friday.
