Mexican musicians perform in Belize

Story Picture
It may be getting a little bit late, but if you hustle you can still make it to a concert at the U.W.I. School of Continuing Studies. Patrick Jones has a preview of what amounts to a full week of music, courtesy of our friends from Mexico.

The show tonight will feature Mexican concert pianist Mauricio Nader. Nadar says the show will feature pieces tailored specifically for the Belize audience.

Mauricio Nader, Concert Pianist

“We are going to be listening to a lot of Mexican music for piano, including romantic music, impressionistic, the Twentieth Century and nationalistic. So it will really be a complete program and I hope everyone will enjoy it.”

Nader says he has been a pianist since his childhood and find it’s a meaningful vehicle for cultural expression.

Mauricio Nader

“Piano is such a beautiful instrument and Mexican music, I am sure, they will find very unusual here in Belize. This is my first time in Belize as well, so I think it’s going to be very enjoyable. Its not, even for a pianist, these are not the usual pieces that any pianist will play. This is a very specific programme that I planned especially of this concert. So I hope they will come and listen.”

Guillermo Gutierrez, Cultural Attaché, Mexican Embassy

“Our idea is to show to the Belizean public a different option. As you remember during the last friendship fair at the Memorial Park, we presented basically folkloric and dancing groups. This time, we are trying to offer a different option to the cultural area from Mexico.”

Patrick Jones

“Who are the people who should attend these concerts?”

Guillermo Gutierrez

“Well the invitation is open to the general public, but its important to point out that all the musicians are offering workshops just for Belizean musicians.”

Patrick Jones, for News 5.

Tonight’s concert, starting at seven-thirty, is the first of three that will be staged in Belize City and Belmopan. On Tuesday night Guitarist Oscar Cardenas will perform at the Mexican Cultural Institute on the Barracks with a repeat performance on Wednesday in Belmopan. On Thursday, the Mexican Embassy in Belmopan will be the venue for violinist Samuel Maynez’s performance, and the final show is set for next Friday night in Belize City. After the concerts, Gutierrez says Belizeans can look forward to the annual Day of the Dead exhibition at the end of the month. In November, the Mexican Embassy will sponsor an art exhibition by Pen Cayetano.
