Taiwan Embassy teaches Chinese cooking
If you set aside greasy fried chicken, it’s likely that the number one choice of Belizeans dining out is Chinese food. But while many people enjoy it, very few of us make the effort to cook Chinese cuisine at home. Today, the Embassy of Taiwan tried to change that situation.

It looks good, and judging from the look on these ladies faces, the freshly cooked spring rolls are certainly tasty. Chinese food is one of the most popular cuisines in Belize, but not many non-Chinese people know how to cook the Asian cuisine…that is until today when a number of women decided it was time to test their kitchen skills.

“It’s nice to be acquainted with the Taiwanese food, since we have so many Taiwanese living in Belize now. And this has been new to a lot of our members, a lot of them have already said that they will try this at home, so husbands be ready.”
Families do not need to worry, these women are receiving training from the best. Linda Tsai, wife of the Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize, and a member of the International Women’s Club, decided to give her friends a helping hand at preparing the food. Tsai says it’s not only teaching the participants how to cook, but how to cook healthy.

“It depends how you prepare the Chinese food. Some of it is quite oily, but if you know how to cook and how to prepare, and also very healthy something just like today, we use just soybean products. And also, even the spring roll, inside we just use a lot of vegetables to prepare that dish.”
The one-day cooking session was held for members of the International Women’s Club. Usually the participants are busy throughout the year trying to find money to help people and organisations that are in need.

“Raise funds for various charities such as the King’s Children’s Home. We also give scholarships for young ladies in need to go to high school or junior college. We also do feeding programmes, we help when there is hurricane, any sort of disaster. We try to raise funds to feed them or give whatever is necessary.”
How soon these women will try the dish at home in not known, but one thing is sure: spring rolls will be in high demand this week as activities take place to celebrate National Day for the Republic of China on Taiwan. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.
The International Women’s Club has close to seventy members.
