High school poets present works

Story Picture
They’ve recently moved back into newly refurbished offices, but the House of Culture has not missed a beat in promoting the works of local artists. The next activity on their calendar is an evening of poetry and prose. Project Coordinator Jason Guerrero, says the forum, which has been a year in the making, will see some of the Belize District’s best high school poets and prose writers bringing their work to life on the stage on the first Friday of each month beginning this week.

Jason Guerrero, Project Coordinator

“The whole idea of “Poets R Us” is to encourage high school students in particular. We’ve had programmes with primary schools and senior citizens, but we’ve never done anything specifically for high school students. So we thought it would be a good idea for them to partake in presenting original poetry, as we’ve seen a lot of movement and interest in that area. So here is an opportunity to challenge the students to bring your original poetry and recite them among your peers. And this is, aside from the educational aspect, it is a social as well for high school students in a nice environment here at the House of Culture. It’s a forum for students to be able to recite their artistic literary creations. It’s open to high schools in the entire Belize District. Each of the high schools have been written, principals have been asked to get the help of their English teachers in promoting this. So it’s open to the entire district.”

Guerrero says while it is not a competition, at the end of the year, the organisers plan to recognize who they consider are outstanding presenters. Friday’s “Poets R Us” presentation is schedule to start at five o’clock in the evening.
