Special Envoy Wants Police to Fix Procedure Following San Pedro Woman’s Humiliation

The early morning fracas turned shooting incident on San Pedro Town on Saturday continues to make waves. Video surfaced which showed that it started when Police officers working at a nightclub were trying to subdue a woman patron even after they put handcuffs on her and had her on the ground. The matter has caught the attention of the Special Envoy for Women and Children Kim Simplis Barrow, who has issued a statement. In it she states  “This incident brings into sharp focus the need for an immediate, objective and comprehensive review of the Belize Police Department’s protocols and practices on the use of force and managing difficult cases and situations.”   Simplis condemned what she calls unwarranted acts of violence, especially against women and children.  The Special Envoy closes with a call for the Police to use less provocative ways to maintain public order and safety and for the Professional Standard Branch to investigate and take action, to end all instances of this nature. At news time, it is known that the woman, who was brutalized, filed a complaint on Tuesday afternoon at the Raccoon Street Police Station with investigator, ACP Keith Lino.
