Churches Remind of Importance of Easter

While many Belizeans are on their way to their vacation spot to spend the Easter holidays, is the Christian tradition being lost to secular activities? Earlier today, a symbolic artwork of Jesus was erected on the Saint Martin De Porres Parish compound. News Five spoke with Father Matt Ruhl about the message for the Holy Week, which he says should be a celebration of keeping God and faith.

“Cisco was predominantly in charge of creating the cross and then he was after Jackie to do a Jesus. And she was trying to think about how to do a Jesus and she did say that it was on her bucket-list. And then finally she decided that all these little pieces of rebar that were left over from building the roads. So it is all made out of scrap rebar. So the whole thing is just a gorgeous steel Jesus in the middle of a neighborhood that really needs religious art.”

“So it is calling residents to come out, to turn to God?”

“Well it is Jesus’ message. All the little pieces of rebar represent our sins which have put Christ on the cross. And so the fact that Jesus was willing to be crucified is a demonstration of his willingness to forgive us our sins. And so yes, it is a symbol of our own sinfulness, it is a symbol of Jesus’ forgiveness of our sins and an invitation to come in and worship the one who was not destroyed by either sin or death. It’s very fortunate that this happened just before Good Friday and I would like and the artist would like to not lose—this is not Christmas time. We don’t want to lose another holiday to just eating and drinking and making fun. This is a very sobering event in history. It was the death and resurrection in Christ.”
