Long weekend includes plenty of sports

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley presenting you with yet another fresh edition of Sports Monday. Week eleven of the Regent’s Cup Tournament took Juventus of Orange Walk into the Norman Broaster Stadium Saturday night for its scheduled match with Real Verdes of San Ignacio.

For certain the home field advantage propels Verdes to fast start, and they try to impress the scoreboard in the very opening moments of the ballgame.

We’re some thirty minutes in when this Verdes domination finds true expression as Harrison Roaches unleashed this left foot that simply overpowers Darren Hinds for the 1-zip Verdes lead.

Orange Walk tries to respond off this long feed inside the danger zone, but the goalkeeper takes charge.

Juventus then gets close to the equaliser, but the left foot offering from Edmund Thomas inches in front of the sticks.

Meanwhile, when Darren Hinds mishandles this long shot, he provides a golden opportunity to the opposition, but the Verdes team can’t capitalise. At the half Verdes does hold on to the 1-nil lead.

Some ten minutes after intermission this corner kick provides Verdes with all kinds of opportunities to double the score, but the Juventus defence stands firm.

However, it’s that same defence that gives up this goal much too easily and Ricardo Jimenez takes credit after being at the right place at the right time.

Verdes could make it a 3-zip ballgame right here when Roaches sets table for Jimenez, but he squanders the opportunity. Downfield the O.W. team gets another open look at goal, but the header is misdirected. The rebound goes to Eden “Yellowman” Rawley and Juventus gets on the scoreboard at the eighty-eighth minute.

It proved to be a case of too little too late as Real Verdes grabs the 2-1 big W.

In other action over the weekend San Pedro Seahawks stunned Kulture Yabra 2-1. The defending champion Sagitun of Independence rebounded by sinking Builders Hardware Bandits 3-zip, and Kenton Galvez scored his league leading ninth goal of the season as Jacintoville blanked Griga United 1-nil.

Turning to the cycling scene, let’s check in on the finish of the high school race presented by Edward P. Yorke High School and the Belize Cycling Association on Sunday. It’s Amir Vasquez of S.J.C. taking the win. Ornel Sosa, also of S.J.C., picks up second. Tariq Cano of Belize Christian Academy is third, Jeremias Barillas of S.J.C. is fourth, and Zane Galvez of S.J.C. rounds out the top five. As you can see, S.J.C. took four of the top five spots.

In softball news, the C.L.B. Rogers Memorial Tournament was staged on Sunday at Roger’s Stadium in tribute to the Hon. Charles Lindberg Rogers, who was an avid softball fan in his days.

In money-time team C.T.C. of Belize, led by Shirlene Banner, took the quadrangular title with a 6-3 score over Sherraine Westby and Lord’s Bank Sunrise in the finals. We say congratulations.

Most valuable player of the tournament went to Sharette Suazo, while the homerun derby was won by Sherraine Westby. Folks, the trophies were presented by legendary pitcher, Consuelo Dougal, and we believe the sport of softball should have honoured this outstanding Belizean with much more than enthusiasm.

That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place, next week. Before we go we say nuff respect to Consuelo Dougal. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
