Guatemalan businessman murdered in Jalacte
We start our newscast tonight with a murder deep in the south where a Guatemalan businessman was stabbed to death a stone’s throw away from the western border near the southern village of Jalacte. On Thursday night, a relative of Carlos Pop Xol notified police that they had discovered his motionless body a short distance away from the military outpost known as Tree Tops. When Punta Gorda police responded to the scene they found Xol lying face up with a number of stab wounds to the body. It is believed that the businessman, a resident of San Fernando Cha’al, Alta Vera Paz, Guatemala was robbed before being viciously assaulted by a pair of men who are yet to be identified. Punta Gorda police are of the opinion that Xol’s attackers may have been from Belize. This evening, News Five spoke with A.S.P. Clement Cacho who heads the Southern Police Formation.

“On Thursday, April 20th, 2017, approximately 5:30 p.m., information was received of the lifeless body of a male person approximately half mile from the Tree Tops Outpost whilst passing the Jalacte junction. As a result, police visited the area where they saw a Maya descent male person lying face up wearing a black t-shirt and a long blue jeans pants and a brown shoes with multiple stab wounds across his body. Initial investigation revealed that the deceased was identified as Carlos Pop Xol, forty-four year-old Guatemalan national of San Fernando Cha’al, Alta Vera Paz, Guatemala. He was heading back to Guatemala from Bella Vista village when he was attacked by two male persons who inflicted the fatal injuries to Carlos Pop Xol. At this moment a post mortem is ongoing and the police are seeking two individuals in this case. It appears that Mr. Xol was robbed of all his belongings.”

“Is there any indication preliminarily who these suspects are? Are they Belizeans? Are they Guatemalans who may have committed this crime on this side of the border and fled back over to Guatemala?”

“We believe that the suspects are from the country of Belize. It was one of the family members who identified the body to the police. The investigation is ongoing as we speak, however, as soon as we gather further information that can be shared with the public and the media we will definitely do so.”
The suspects in this latest homicide remain at large.
