New calendar features Belizean males
With the annual Belikin calendar now in its third year and enjoying enviable success, it was only a matter of time until someone got the bright idea to publish a calendar full of photogenic Belizean males. That time has now arrived.
Tanya Barrow, Green Banana
“Women scream when they open the calendar, gial we di do this long time. Congratulations for coming up with the idea and so on.”
Janelle Chanona, Reporting
That’s Tanya Barrow, talking about her company, Green Banana’s first project: a male calendar called Belizean Jewels.
Barrow convinced ten local men to take off most of their clothes to pose.

“We wanted to do something that would make money and we figured that from the requests of women all across Belize: when will a male calendar come out, when will a male calendar come out…me doing graphic design and websites and so on, I figured why not do a male calendar, and the funds from that we put into starting a business, as oppose to going to the bank and borrowing money and getting investors and kind of thing. We create something, make money off of it and put it back into the business.”
But no Belizean endeavour is without controversy and a centrefold we can’t show you is it.

“I’ve had one or two people say, oh that’s too X-rated. But it is up to the female to decide whether they want to have it hanging or continue and turn to July. It’s not a month; it’s just a bonus, a little teaser type thing for females. I know it’s something that most women would like.”
And the models like the attention…James Bradley is into his newfound fame even though he’s already had to change his phone number.

“I nevah know that it was going to be that good, because it actually came out well and fun doing it.”
“The good thing was, “hey man you look good.” From my friends, the guys were teasing me. But the response from the females, it was lovely… I feel good about it.”
The 2004 Belizean Jewels calendar is on sale at Green Banana’s office on Baymen Avenue.
