Mexicans Trade Mission in Belize

Today, the Embassy of Mexico and the Mexican trade and investment agency, ProMexico, organized a Commercial Mission to Belize where seven companies from Cancun and Merida brought products and services to meet with local entrepreneurs. Officials from the Mexican trade team were joined by representatives from BELTRAIDE as well as the Belize Chamber of Commerce. News Five stopped in to speak with the officials about what this mission means for cross border business between the two countries.

“We have building materials. This company here they bring in finishing for pools and for interiors. We have another company also in the sector of building materials who brings in treatments for wood and lumber. We also have another company in the fashion sector who brings in interchangeable sandals. We brought also services. We have company that is developing software that is based in Cancun who is also looking for some talent here in Belize which is important for the other way.  Most of those companies they had already some appointments from counterparts which means they have already some interest from both sides of the business.”

“We find this kind of exercise very productive because they bring investors from Mexico and investors from Belize together. They can exchange ideas and they can look for new business opportunities on both side of the border. This is one of many missions that we have done and it has been quite successful. We have received quite a lot of people.  Belize offers a lot of products that we need in Mexico, especially in Riviera Maya, not only Chetumal, but also the Riviera Maya. We would like to see more Belizean investors. More trade between Mexico and Belize. We want to bring Mexican products to Belize, but we want to see more Belizean products to Mexico. And you have a lot of opportunities in Mexico, especially Riviera Maya all the way from Chetumal to Merida, which you know is a very large market where we receive not only Mexican locals but a lot of tourists who come to the area.”

Rosa Elena Lozano Vasquez, Secretariat for Economic Development, Quintana Roo

“Right now the Government of Quintana Roo is developing an industrial park in the southern part of the state. It will work basically as an economic processing zonewhere companies can produce things to export overseas. There are some Belizean companies that are going to open soon, in Chetumal specifically, like Caribbean Tires.”
