Before Re-Arrest, Canadian National Denies Charges

The couple, a retired officer of the U.S. Marine Corps and his Canadian girlfriend, was found dead in a cane field off the Patchakan/Chan Chen Road after being reported missing six days earlier.  The badly decomposed bodies of DeVoursney and Matus were found by a cane farmer who showed up for work on the land on May first.  Deshaies was nabbed soon after and has been in police custody as a person of interest. This afternoon at midday, he was able to meet the required sum that was set as bail for theft; however, DeShaies is still not off the hook.  He was rearrested shortly thereafter, as the murder investigation continues.  He spoke with the media briefly, prior to being rearrested.

“This was a false charge in the first place and I got bail set today and I am free now.  But it will all come out in court that it was all false.  It was a business-related thing.  I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“There is the notion that you will be rearrested immediately upon release with regards to your suspected involvement in the murders of the Canadian and the American nationals in Corozal.  Can you speak to us firstly about your knowledge of the woman herself, before anything else?”

“Francesca was a beautiful friend of mine.  We lived together there for two years in the house.  It was her house and she live upstairs and I lived downstairs and she was one of the most beautiful persons you’d ever meet.  We’ve always been good friends and there’s absolutely nothing that I’ve ever done to hurt her and this was all just… I’m assuming that I was accused because I lived in the same house but otherwise there was nothing that ever happened between us to make anybody think that.  Any of our friends would never think that.”

“There are reports suggesting that you guys had some sort of quarrel or a fight, some sort of disagreement a few hours before she went missing.  Are you able to share the particulars of that situation, why persons were reporting that there was a disagreement you all?”

“The only person who would say something like that would be the person across the street and he would have done that just because we’ve had an ongoing issue, but there’s absolutely never a harsh word between Francesca and myself.  We never, ever had a problem and everybody knows that.”
