Stone Penner? P.U.P. Says They’ll See Him in Court

Elvin Penner testified without major incident last Wednesday in Belmopan at the public hearing of the Senate Special Select Committee. But it appears authorities were ready for anything, as the anti-riot barrier was put up in front of the National Assembly and Police stood ready inside and outside the House. Were the Opposition People’s United Party expected to bring supporters to harass Penner, who was famously egged following an interview on the courthouse steps in February of 2015? P.U.P. leader John Briceño says they want much more from the ex-Minister of State.

“This Senate hearing is taking place because it was we in the P.U.P. – remember when Lisa Shoman, we were pushing and pushing them to have a Senate hearing and it was then that Senator Godwin Hulse said, well, we can’t have the Senate hearing until the report comes out. We waited for years for the report to come out and once the report came out, then we were ones that started pushing for there to be a Senate hearing. Now we can take the crowd out there and ‘bruk up’ the place – to what end? To what end? Where will that put us? What we want is to get Elvin Penner to court, where he can answer what has taken place in the Immigration Department. What we want [is to] have the Government to be able to be more accountable and to be more transparent as to what it is that has taken place in their Government. Who are the ministers that have been involved? We have been hearing many names of many of the ministers who have been involved in the scandals in the Immigration Department; there are all but three ministers that were not named in the Audit Report. That is where we want to go. We can go and make all the noise and ‘bruk up’ but that’s not where we want to hold these people accountable. And the Senate hearing is a beginning, and we are going to take it even further.”

Penner returns to the Senate Special Select Committee on Wednesday and we will air it live and have all the highlights in the newscast.
