Kids radio show wins award

Story Picture
The Kid-O-Rama Show is Belize’s first radio programme to be produced by children. Today, the National Committee for Families and Children announced that the show has won the international One World/UNICEF Award for Outstanding Children’s Radio. According to the N.C.F.C.’s Executive Director, Judith Alpuche, late last year they decided to submit the entry because they simply believed it had the quality to win. Alpuche says the children–and adults who assisted them–have worked really hard and they are thrilled that the show has been internationally recognized.

“The One World/UNICEF Award is an international award that is done for outstanding children’s radio. And late last year Kid-O-Rama put in a submission because we do think that we have international quality children’s programming and we won actually. We are one of the finalists, along with countries like Senegal, Philippines, Ukraine etcetera. We actually got identified as one of the countries that do have outstanding children’s programming.”

“Camille, I know that the radio programme is pre-recorded, tell us how it is done. You go into Love FM studios, a technician records you? There is a script you follow?”

Camille Ottley, Participant, Kid-O-Rama

“Yes ma’am. On Saturdays all of us come in, we write the script and when it if finished, on Tuesdays we go in at four o’clock and we record the show.”

“Do you talk about different issues affecting children? What’s the focus of the show?”

Camille Ottley

“The show is hosted by children for children to educate them on the rights of a child and how to use their rights, because with rights come respect and responsibility and that is one of the messages that we try to send out.”

On Tuesday night at the Radisson Fort George the children will receive a group award plus individual certificates recognizing their achievement. During the ceremony, a video on the Convention on the Rights of the Child will also be screened.
