P.U.C. explains electricity policy

Story Picture
It is one of those bodies you don’t hear much about until the phone company raises rates or the electricity company decides to build a dam, but today the Public Utilities Commission made an effort to assure the public that it is alive and regulating. This morning, representatives of the P.U.C. met with the media to talk about issues in the energy industry. According to Victor Lewis, like rates charged by every other public utility, the price of electricity is carefully managed to protect the consumer, while creating a viable market for the provider.

Dr. Victor Lewis, Public Utilities Commission

“They have bi-laws tell B.E.L. what money they can make they can make the cost of power passing through; they don’t make a penny on the cost of power, it passes through. What we have to do in the cost of power is make sure that B.E.L. buys power efficiently and make sure that they buy fuel efficiently. Make sure that they don’t buy from BECOL or anybody else because it is convenient. Did you buy from BECOL or C.F.E. because it is the most economic power at the point in time? That is our concern there and we’re very serious about that.”
