Fight ends in death of Honduran
A game of cards ended in deadly violence on Saturday night in the Belize City riverside neighbourhood of Lindo’s Alley. Police say they were called to the area following an altercation and upon arrival, found twenty-year-old Honduran Saul Montejo fatally wounded in the kitchen of the house he occupied with four other people. Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid says Montejo had been chopped in the back and head.

“Apparently an argument broke out for some reason now that we are not quite clear yet, but we are doing investigating and questioning of some people. But it resulted in one of the persons picking up a machete and inflicting fatal wounds to one of the other persons. So certainly at this point we have a murder on our hands.”
“What the police would like to do is acknowledge the help of members of the community who were quick in responding to the police call for help and gave us all the information that we needed to ascertain exactly who were in the house and that led to the detention of these people.”
The three people who are detained are all housemates of Montejo. A woman is also being sought for questioning. Reid says the police believe they have the machete man in custody and while he alone will be charged for Montejo’s murder, the others may be cited for their involvement in the fight that resulted in the death of the off-duty security officer.
