Haven House Hosts Anti-Domestic Violence Walk
The Haven House is a non-profit shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. It was established in 1993 to provide support and intervention services including emergency shelter, counseling, court advocacy, referrals and transitional living opportunities for victims. In order to better serve the women and children who use the services, Haven House is hoping to raise at least five thousand dollars this week. They are holding a Five-K Walk and Run on Saturday morning. We spoke with Board of Directors Vice President Alyssa Carnegie who tells us why you should support this initiative.

“So, we are having a 5K color walk and run that starts at BTL Park and goes along Princess Margaret Drive and back. We are really excited about it because it is really different, unlike any of the walks that we participated in. But just like that it is for a good cause. We have going three stations and three stations on the way back that are color powder stations at which the participants will be doused in non-toxic colored powder. We are really hoping to raise five thousand dollars. The centre does provide such critical services. It does operate only by referrals so, we would get referral by the Women’s Department or the Domestic Violence Unit. But provide real critical care and support services. We have a house mother who would cook and while provide food and shelter. And then needs are different because we have kids who are three days old come in to the shelter seeking haven and then others who are teenagers. So, each case is different. Each case is unique. And we would like to get the shelter to a point where it could be able to provide its support services to a larger community, especially as we start to build awareness to a place that does exist that there are people that care and there are services you can access.”
Twenty-five dollars is the cost of registration, which will also get you a free t-shirt. The Five-K starts at 5:30 on Saturday morning. There will be hydration stations along the way.
